The problem

Motion sickness is a widespread and growing issue in vehicle travel. 1 in 3 occupants are highly sensitive, affecting nearly 100 million Americans. The problem shows up in symptoms that go beyond nausea, including fatigue, headaches, mood swings and temperature changes. Each year, over 14 billion hours are spent in vehicles while experiencing discomfort. With the rise of EVs, autonomous driving, and ridesharing (~20% CAGR), the problem is expected to worsen.

Current seating systems remain underutilized. Power seat actuators are rarely used after initial setup, leaving valuable hardware idle. Meanwhile, occupants constantly make small postural adjustments, leading to fatigue and disatisfaction. In addition, seat functionality is still limited by localized ECU architectures and few personalization features, restricting intelligent, system-level control.

There is a clear opportunity to turn seats into intelligent, adaptive systems. By leveraging software and vehicle data, existing hardware can mitigate motion sickness, improving productivity and ride experience.

Our solution

The PREACT technology is inspired by the only occupant who rarely gets motion sick: the driver. Developed at the University of Michigan, it uses anticipation and preemption to target the sensory conflict that is the root cause of motion sickness. This allows PREACT to improve all symptoms and not just nausea.

The same anticipatory technology is available in the PREACT Pillow for passengers, and built into vehicle seating through PREACT Seats, co-developed with automotive partners.

How PREACT works

Motion sickness comes from a mismatch between what you feel and what you expect.

PREACT addresses the root cause by alerting the body to motion before it happens, reducing overall discomfort.

It is delivered through predictive seat control, using vehicle data via plug-and-play ECU or integrated software compatible with existing seats.

Our research

Since 2019, we have been exploring the root causes of motion sickness and developing solutions to make rides more comfortable.

Through research at the University of Michigan, PREACT has been validated through human-subject testing in real vehicle environments.

In these studies, participants performed in-vehicle tasks while reporting motion sickness scores and physiological data was continuously collected.

Results show up to a 40% reduction in motion sickness, along with improved passenger performance and strong user interest, with over 80% of participants expressing a desire to use the technology.
